Conceptualizing a case systemically can be challenging, because of the many family members and influences that are relevant to our work with clients. In the practicum courses I teach, students are required to write a case summary and present the case to the class. In this post, I outline and explain the sections of the case summary assignment. In this section, summarize essential details related to the history of the case, both before you were the therapist if relevant as well as during your work with the client s. She complained of difficulty sleeping, lethargy, and periods of crying, without a clear cause.

These symptoms have been present for two years, since she and her husband began having marital conflict due to disagreements about their adult daughter. Their daughter is living in their home and doesn't have a job; this is affecting the couple's financial stability. According to Sarah, she advocates for her daughter, while her husband wants to kick their daughter out of the house. She and her husband are in concurrent couples therapy and have negotiated setting boundaries with their daughter.

Therapist secured releases of information for Sarah's psychiatrist and primary care physician, and also completed a basic genogram covering three generations of Sarah's family. A genogram will help you assess and document this information, which can be included as an appendix in your case summary.

This section serves as a transition from assessment to treatment conceptualization. What were the treatment priorities for the client? How were they determined? In the next section, treatment priorities are transformed into treatment goals. These experiences will be used as resources for alleviating Sarah's symptoms long-term. Together, therapist and Sarah identified times when Sarah is motivated. She explained that she is most motivated when she is at work. Having concrete, actionable tasks helps Sarah feel useful.

Sarah chose to create daily tasks for herself at home, in order to improve her motivation. She is completing at least 3 tasks daily. She reports feeling proud and more hopeful at this stage of therapy from a 3 in hope to a 5.

Answer the same questions as above, for interventions. Some tips for writing this section:. Remember, interventions need not be formal, complex activities. Job Searching Resumes.Mediation is not something people are excited to be involved in, but it is necessary sometimes.

Your mediation summary can make the process easier both for yourself, but also the mediator.

The Case Brief

A good mediation summary will include some key components, tell a story, take the right tone, provide evidence, and include a discussion of risk. Your summary should include a brief case description and the legal issues involved in it. Introduce what the dispute is concerning. Give some information about where in the process the case is, and if there are any depositions or discoveries being requested or carried out.

Summarize the discussion, including what each party is requesting as settlement. Describe what you assess as preventing a settlement from being reached. If there are any important dynamics, such as personality conflicts, you believe are effecting the positions, then elaborate on them. Explain what has occurred to bring this case to mediation, and why the complainant acted in a manner that has caused this mediation to become necessary.

Your story should have a theme, all good stories do. Tone can facilitate or totally undermine the effectiveness of a mediation.

Mediation works best when both parties enter it with an attitude of collaboration and problem solving. Approaching mediation as joint problem solvers means taking a cooperative tone. The proper tone and atmosphere is key for a reasonable and amicable settlement. This means reasonable and logical language, rather than angry and accusatory language. The tone should be one conducive to de-escalating and solving the situation, not getting even or becoming emotional.

Attach your evidence to the summary when you submit it. Doing this shows you are not only being truthful, but are also prepared to go to court if a settlement cannot be mediated. Your evidence also helps by encouraging the other party to engage and explain their position. Sometimes sufficient evidence is all it takes for the other side to realize they are the one in the wrong and agree to your settlement request.

By not including evidence you are signalling to the mediator and the other side that you have a weak case, and this will make reaching a settlement with them extra difficult.

One of the greatest advantages of a case study is that it allows researchers to investigate things that are often difficult to impossible to replicate in a lab. The case study of Genie, for example, allowed researchers to study whether language could be taught even after critical periods for language development had been missed. In Genie's case, her horrific abuse had denied her the opportunity to learn a language at critical points in her development.

This is clearly not something that researchers could ethically replicate, but conducting a case study on Genie allowed researchers the chance to study otherwise impossible to reproduce phenomena.

This allows researchers to gather more information before developing their research questions and hypotheses. Researchers might study a group of people in a certain setting or look at an entire community of people. There are also different methods that can be used to conduct a case study:.Case studies are the case in education process that most often makes students seek immediate help.

No pun intended but the task is one of the most challenging because it gets really close to real life situations and so requires more work than just paraphrasing textbook ideas. Case studies are scientific and critical exploration of a situation or a phenomenon that poses a problem and requires providing suggested solutions, recommendations and pathway to avoiding similar problems in future.

Case studies are used by teachers to see how students can apply received knowledge in daily situations. On the one hand it is useful, but on the other hand coping with this complex assignment is a problem linked to permanent time shortage and study loads placed on students. So here is no place for skirting around the topic all paper long. It is all about preciseness, conciseness and practicality. Thus to survive the case study paper writing take some useful tips that will save your precious time and future grades.

First, do no repeat the text of the case itself. It is the first step that already leads to failure. No excessive theorizing and expatiating. Watery text is another indicator of paper weakness. Just analysis and recommendations that synthesize theory and evidence into sound suggestions.

Never miss out the executive summary and Solutions and Recommendations section. This is what case studies exist for, actually. Basically, there are two major ways how to write a case study: historical way and problem-oriented path. Historical way is evaluation of the situation that is already solved or closed. It is a kind of retrospective learning with purpose of preventing such cases in future. Problem-oriented one deals with current situations that are in progress and so in need of actual solutions and predictions of outcomes.

There is no finite end to the situation, so it is all the more useful to explore it, suggest a solution and then compare with the actual outcomes.
